POWERING PEACE: Toward a Renewable Energy Future for UN Peace Operations

The event will begin at 11:30 AM Eastern Standard Time.

The Permanent Missions of Norway and the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations and Powering Peace (a partnership between Energy Peace Partners and the Stimson Center) invite you to a virtual discussion on the renewable energy future of UN peace operations.

At the event, Under-Secretary-General for Operational Support Atul Khare and Assistant-Secretary-General for Climate Action Selwin Hart will discuss next steps in the UN Secretariat’s commitment to 80 percent renewable energy usage by 2030. Alongside the launch of the report “Shifting Power: Transitioning to Renewable Energy in United Nations Peace Operations,” Special Representative to the Secretary-General James Swan, Deputy Special Representative to the Secretary-General David Gressly, and Powering Peace will present the latest evidence from the field on options to reduce peacekeeping missions’ reliance on high-cost diesel in favor of cleaner, more effective sustainable energy infrastructure that benefits host communities.

The event will kick-off a series of workshops and panels in 2021 and 2022 on renewables implementation in specific security contexts and broader UN peace operations.
