As the world celebrates 75 years of the United Nations, the UAE reaffirms its commitment to the principles of multilateralism and peace upon which the organization was founded. As a symbol of that commitment, the UAE lit the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, blue for UN Day.
The UN came into existence on 24 October 1945 following the ratification of the Charter of the UN by a majority of its founding members. The Charter offers a framework for countries around the world to work together towards international peace through inclusive, resilient, and innovative solutions.
In a year of seismic global disruption, we must harness the power of international cooperation in remembrance of our shared humanity. That is why the UAE is proud to join the United Nations in the collective efforts to assess our joint ways and means of for creating a more equitable and sustainable world.
The World Government Summit virtual event, 75 Minutes for Global Collaboration, held on October 26, addressed these very issues. From the importance of multilateralism to the need to combat climate change, increase digital cooperation and create opportunities, the event underscored the significance of international solidarity. UN Secretary General António Guterres remarked on the importance of global action, especially as we face the collective crises of COVID-19 and the ongoing impacts of climate change, an issue where he welcomed the efforts of the UAE.
On UN Day, the UAE strives to uphold the values set forth in the UN Charter and reaffirms its commitment to UN and the promise of peace that underpins it, today and for the generations to come. As we celebrate 75 years, the UAE looks to the future and being prepared to respond to current and future transnational challenges, because in other words, being ‘future-ready’ will ultimately help us to fulfill the goals set out in the UN Charter.
As Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh said in her speech on UN Day, “It is now up to us as Member States to revive the spirit of multilateralism, to strengthen our cooperation, and to demonstrate the continued benefits of collective global action. And, ultimately, to ensure that the UN delivers on its promises to people around the world.”
