The UAE Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the United Nations which allows the UAE to offer its nationals expert to work with the UN Secretariat and the entities that it administers.

Her Excellency Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Permanent Representative of the UAE to the UN has signed the MoU on behalf of the UAE government, while the UN was represented by Mr Wu Hongbo, Under Secretary General of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA). The signing ceremony took place in the presence of HE Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Minister of State for The Federal National Council Affairs, and Baronnes Valerie Amos the Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator.

The Associate Experts Programme, the title of this memorandum, would allow candidates holding advanced university qualifications to assist the UN for a period of one year, often extended to two years, in the following departments:

  • United Nations Secretariat (Headquarters and Field offices, incl. Peacekeeping Operations and Special Political Missions)
  • Secretariat of the United Nations System Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB)
  • Joint Inspection Unit (JIU)
  • Regional Commissions (ECA, ECE, ESCWA, ECLAC, ESCAP)
  • Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR)
  • International Court of Justice and United Nations Tribunals
  • United Nations Secretariat of the Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)
  • United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD)
  • United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)
  • Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI)
  • United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR)
  • United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC)
  • United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy in Central Asia (UNRCCA)
  • United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD)
  • United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC)

The UAE is the second Arab country, and the twenty ninth worldwide to join the programme. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of UAE, along with the Ministry of International Cooperation and Development have been coordinating efforts to launch a program in UAE which will utilize this UN Program, a formal program and selection process will be announced.
