UN Security Council High-Level Briefing on Cooperation between the UN and the League of Arab States

As part of its presidency of the UN Security Council, the United Arab Emirates will host a high-level briefing on strengthening cooperation between the United Nations and the League of Arab States (LAS). Over the years, the United Nations Security Council has become increasingly aware of the potential role of regional organizations in maintaining international peace and security, as reflected in its resolutions and presidential statements.

Within this context, the United Nations Security Council and the League of Arab States (LAS) continue to work towards a common goal of promoting peace, security, and stability in the Arab region and beyond. During the UAE’s last presidency, the Council adopted a Presidential Statement that welcomed the strong cooperation between the UN and the Arab League and expressed its intention to consider steps that would further strengthen this vital partnership.

This briefing will build on those commitments by exploring opportunities for collaboration in a number of critical areas for the region and its people, including through promoting the role of women and youth, combating terrorism and extremism, and fostering a culture of tolerance to strengthen and sustain regional peace and stability.
