The Permanent Missions of France, Mali, Norway, and the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations, the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), Energy Peace Partners, and Stimson Center are hosting a virtual discussion of the cost, security, climate, and community dimensions of increased renewable energy in the UN peacekeeping operation MINUSMA in Mali.
The event takes place as part of the Berlin Climate Security Conference on Wednesday 6 October from 4:00 to 5:30 pm CEST (10:00 to 11:30 am NY time) and is open to UN and IRENA delegations, as well as interested stakeholders. Please register to receive a link by clicking the RSVP button.
MINUSMA is one of the largest energy consumers among UN peacekeeping operations, hosted by communities with some of the lowest energy access rates globally, and provides a compelling case study as the UN targets 80% renewable energy by 2030. Initial results from the field suggest reduced cost, greenhouse gas emissions, and security risks vs diesel, while also providing a positive legacy for host communities that can outlast the mission.
The event draws on the ground-breaking report “From Renewable Energy to Peacebuilding in Mali“, as well as features the perspectives of SRSG and head of MINUSMA El-Ghassim Wane, including in the context of the new UN compact to accelerate achievement of the 80% target.
