Mr. President,
First, I would like to congratulate the Permanent Representative of the Arab Republic of Egypt, His Excellency Ambassador Osama Mahmoud Abdel Khaleq, on assuming the presidency of the work of the Fifth Committee for the 78th session, and all elected members. I am pleased as well to congratulate Mr. Mohammed Khalifa Alnasr of the state of Qatar on assuming the position of Vice-Chair of the Fifth Committee.
I would also like to thank the Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Belgium, His Excellency Ambassador Philippe Kridelka, and members of his office, and Mr. Abdullah bin Ali Ahmed of the Kingdom of Bahrain for their efforts in the previous session. We welcome the appointment of the coordinators to facilitate the discussions on the various agenda items that will be considered during this session.
The UAE joins the statement of the Republic of Cuba on behalf of the Group of 77 and China, and the statement of the Sultanate of Oman on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council group. And now, we would like to make the following statement in our national capacity.
Mr. President,
The Committee has several priority topics for this session, most notably the proposed budget for 2024. Our discussions and decisions are critical in determining the organization’s ability to respond to global challenges. We must allocate the necessary resources for the organization to fulfill its role and responsibility.
We must emphasize here the importance of providing the necessary funding for all special political missions to fully implement their mandate. These are an important tool for maintaining international peace and security.
In conclusion, we would like to stress the importance of issuing reports in a timely manner to grant Member States sufficient time to discuss the relevant draft resolutions. We also look forward to participating in positive and constructive discussions during this session and concluding the work of the session in a timely manner. Therefore, we need to work cooperatively to reach consensus, for it is the basic approach to the work of the Committee.
