The UAE is an active international partner in countering foreign terrorist fighters. The UAE uses the most advanced technology to enhance its border security and exchange relevant information with Member States and INTERPOL, whose current president is Major General Ahmed Nasser Al-Raisi of the UAE. Additionally, the UAE supports victims of terrorism and calls to hold terrorists accountable for their actions, including by contributing to the United Nations Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes Committed by Da’esh/ISIL (UNITAD), which works to collect, preserve, and store evidence of the most serious crimes committed by the terror group in Iraq.

The UAE has also called for renewed attention to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. During our term as Chair of the Group of Member States of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the UAE consistently advocated for a two-state solution and continues to be a steadfast supporter of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

Counterterrorism

The UAE condemns terrorism and extremism in all their forms and is at the forefront of global efforts to counter this scourge in cooperation with the international community.

The UAE is a leading member of the Global Coalition against Da’esh and supports regional and international alliances to combat extremist and terrorist groups in the Middle East and beyond. However, the UAE believes that our fight against extremism and terrorism goes beyond the military aspect and requires multifaceted strategies to address the complex challenges related to this phenomenon. As such, the UAE continues to tackle the root causes of extremism and terrorism, including through education and the promotion of tolerance, peaceful co-existence, and cultural diversity. The UAE has also taken proactive measures to counter the financing of terrorism, to reinforce efforts to hold financiers of terrorism accountable, to promote counter-narratives and address the exploitation of new technologies and online platforms by extremists, to train religious leaders, and to strengthen the role of youth and women in prevention efforts.

The UAE has institutionalized its efforts to prevent extremism and counter terrorism, including by establishing the UAE’s National Committee for Combating Terrorism, The Muslim Council of Elders, and the Sawab Center, which counters Da’esh propaganda online. The UAE also hosts the International Center of Excellence for Combating Violent Extremism—Hedayah—and the Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies.

At the United Nations we have led on empowering youth against terror and extremism. In 2019 the UAE co-hosted the Regional High-Level Conference on “Empowering Youth and Promoting Tolerance: Practical Approaches to Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism Conducive to Terrorism” in Abu Dhabi. With the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism and Hedayah, the conference discusses action initiatives to strengthen resilience against extremism for our young people.

Close Coordination with Regional and International Partners

As a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council, the UAE advocates for regional integration to strengthen stability and security, while encouraging investment and trade to drive our shared economic growth. We believe that regional organizations should be empowered to play a greater role in developing solutions to address challenges confronting their member states.

The UAE works closely with the International Atomic Energy Agency and its international partners to fully support the goals of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT). We are a strong supporter of international maritime security, and we support the fight against maritime piracy by providing technical assistance and capacity building to states along global shipping lanes.

Conflict Resolution

As a stable state in a volatile region, the UAE is committed to maintaining international peace and security. We are a reliable partner to both the UN and its member states, supporting and pursuing political solutions to enduring conflicts.

As part of the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen, we back the adoption of the Stockholm Agreement as the most meaningful path towards ending the conflict.
